Scott Wilson
Unionville Vol. Fire Department
Unionville, PA
Perished April 8, 2001

FF Wilson was engaged in a rescue operation at McConnell's Mill State Park in Slippery Rock, PA. According to reports, A man flipped his kayak in Slippery Rock Creek about 40 miles north of Pittsburgh, and became trapped underwater by the strong current. There were several departments on the scene assisting with the rescue effort.

He was a nine-year veteran of the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department, where he had been a lieutenant and dive team coordinator for two years. He also was a paramedic, a local level instructor for the Pennsylvania Fire Academy, an instructor for the Pennsylvania Department of Health and a certified advanced open-water diver.

Scott was a 1994 graduate of Butler High School and a graduate of the Indiana (Pa.) University Municipal Police Academy.

Volunteers at the Unionville Vol. Fire Department gathered at their station the following day to honor their fallen comrades. The loss of these two heros is the first Line of Duty loss in the history of the department. Pictures and uniforms of both Scott and Anthony lay rest on a table outside the department, and the station bell was sounded 14 times in their honor. The bell was tapped 14 times as Unionville is station number 14 in Butler County.

I hope Cole grows up to know who you are and of how you were a wonderful teacher, and that you always loved him and Tracy. I could tell by the way you talked about them in class. You are the greatest instructer for PSO, you helped us understand and wouldn't give up on us, and you were the most dedicated teacher I have had. I have not gone into the PSO field that we have studied but I did become a LPN so I guess that is the next best thing. You are sadly missed and never will be forgotten. "

"Scott, It is a late night in July of 2002. I am sitting here looking at my life and what I have achieved since your passing. One thing that you had always told me was that love life, be safe, cause that is what it is all about. Scott, you truly are the reason why i still fight fires and save peoples lives on the ambulance. Because of you I saw the true meaning of love and friendship. I have not forgotten you and will never forget you. I know you are there with me every move i make, every fire i fight, and every patient I treat. Oh yeah...I finally made that step that I was afraid of taking the last time we talked. I am half way done with nursing school. In only a few short months I will have achieved something that I was afraid of doing....but with your guiding words and now your guiding spirit I will be hopefully carrying on the love of medicine (the love for medicine that I have only seen one person feel for). God Rest your Body and Soul...but your heart still remains with everyone that cherishes you. Bless Tracy and Cole...for which I still remain to see once a month. They love you and because of the person you ARE they remember............"Not without my brother...""

"Scott was a wonderful brother-in-law to me. Sure, he teased me a lot, but isnt that just a weird way of saying "i love you?" I often went to his house to sleep over and watch movies with him and my sister. He and Cole would often fight over a pacifier which I thought was hilarious. I will treasure everyday that I spent with him forever. Someone told me that God takes his favorites at his time, which is Easter. I definately believe this because I know that anyone who knew Scott loved him within minutes of meeting him. April 8, 2001 will be a day I will never forget. Scott and I were finishing our school day at the Butler Vo-Tech, usually I was in another building, but the last two days I was placed in the Protecive Service Building for other reasons. As the time came for the bell to ring Scott and I got into one of our chit chat discussions, as we often did after after lunch. We found ourselves going from one topic to the next: what are plans were for the weekend, old friends, students, the upcoming EMT test, Tracy, Cole, my husband Mark, etc. It just seemed to be on-going. Before we knew it, the dismissal bell rang and we were still standing their talking. I will miss Scott tremedously. He was a very couraegeous man who was very ambitious, full of life and LOVED to talk. He will be missed by many, especially his students here at the school. A few times today I stopped in to see a few of the sudents and they are still grief stricken. I hope they know how proud Scott was of them, and he would want them to continue with their dreams... "Scott Wilson was my son's teacher at the Vo-Tech in Butler. This loss has affected him very deeply, and although I didn't know Scott personally, I know him through my son and his friends. How one person managed to accomplish so much good in his life is simply amazing, considering that most are content to simply put one foot in front of the other and consider that a good day's work. Scott had a life full of blessings, those that he received himself, and those that he gave to others. He will be remembered. My sincere condolences to friends and family."

"Scott, Thank you for the passion you put into teaching us! It has been my goal to be a PA State trooper for years, and you always encouraged me and challenged me to be better, to give more. The day you named me "Chief" was the greatest honor of my life. I will always remember you. You were my teacher, and now you will be my guardian angel. God Bless You, may you Rest in Peace."

"Scott, You were one of those guys that I could be joking around with one second, and 5 minutes later be completely trusting you to watch my back at a fire. I won't forget your sense of humor, nor our last ride at Prospect's parade, but in Unionvilles truck with you. I moved away 3 1/2 years ago, but my memories of you guys are still fresh in my mind. I miss you Scott. I know, though, that you, unlike us, are in a better place now. Stand down, Scott, and we'll see you again soon, for in the grand scheme of things, our time here on Earth is but the blink of an eye... You are sorely missed... "

"While I did not know Scott well, I had the fortune of attending several classes with him. You can tell when you enter the class room who the "workers" are going to be. Scott was definately one of the people you could count on for a good answer or conversation. It is never easy to learn of a line of duty death related to our business, but it definately makes you sit back and think when it's a face you recognize. I can't imagine the pain his family or brother firemen have to shoulder. My deepest regrets are with you all. Good luck and God bless. "

"Words cannot quite express the empty space I have knowing that a member of Unionville VFD has fallen. My thoughts go out to your family and department members in this tough time. I personally have spent many hours on fire scenes with members of Scott's department. Although I've never had the honor to meet Scott, everyone there is considered family."
