At 3:30pm, Firefighter Winner left his workplace in response to a basement fire in a residence. While working at the pump panel, Robert experienced chest
pains. While a primary and secondary survey was being performed by EMS personnel, he went into cardiac arrest. After being rushed to Allegheny General Hospital
on the North Side of Pittsburgh, he lost his battle. According to Ross Deputy Fire Marshal John Reubi, "He died doing what he loved to do". Also according to
Reubi, Winner owned the Win-son Fire Equipment Co., on Lowries Run Road, a business he took over from his father, James, who was also a volunteer firefighter in
Ross. From his colleagues:
Bob you will be sadly missed by all. You have been a pioneer and asset to the fire service industry.
I would also like to
extend my thanks to Bob’s wife and son.
The two of you extended such warm hugs and words of thanks that helped to guide and instill the self-confidence back into the
broken hearts of the medics that worked so hard to provide Bob the quick and highly skilled professional care that was provided. Although I was not on the scene of
the incident that evening I have witnessed the grieving hearts of so many people whom wish the outcome would have been in Bobs favor. Sally you presented yourself
with such warm and supportive words that allowed all of us to except the fact that sometime no matter how quick or how great we perform our jobs as emergency
providers we just sometime can’t change the outcome. The good lord must have a big job that required the expert ability of Bob. It will forever be in my memory as the
pipers played their music and we were standing at attention with our arms presented for a farewell salute. You and your son emerged from the funeral home as your son
was making eye contact with the saddened hearts of the medics that were watching with great concern he gave us the look and subtle movement of his lips stating thank
you. Most of our line commented about that gesture and stated that was the mo
ment that really filled their hearts with sadness but at the same time allowed them recognize your appreciation for their assistance. We would like to thank you for
attempting to ease our pain and supporting the efforts of the crews involved. On behalf of Ross/West View EMSA I would like to thank all the Fire, EMS and Rescue
personnel that provided their assistance and support. God Bless and Farewell “LEST WE FORGET” 248’s Bravest
