Andrew White
Rocky Grove Vol. Fire Dept.
Franklin, PA
Perished January 11, 2001

FF/Lt. White perished after becoming trapped at a structure/trailer fire. Accodring to reports, the fire advanced very quickly, giving him little time to react to the conditions.

A brief, prepared statement was read by a Rocky Grove fireman and representative of the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy.

'' An interior attack was mounted by the arriving firefighters to attempt to contain the fire. One team of firefighters entered the structure with a charged hoseline onto the first (ground) floor of the trailer, and another team attempt ed to enter into the basement with a charged hoseline,'' the statement said. "Conditions inside the home rapidly deteriorated, forcing the crew on the first floor to quickly evacuate. Miller was severely burned before he escaped through a window. No one knew White was still trapped inside", according to the statement.

" Andy, you are missed by all. Not just the firefighters, not just in Sugarcreek, but by all who knew you or knew of you. I watched you grow up in the fire hall. It's hard to understand that you had to move on in this way. My whole family aches with sorrow for you. (Gabi still talks about "Uncle Andy" all the time.) You will always be her hero as you will always be in all of our hearts in memories. I hope to see you again one day and fight one more fire by your side..."

"Andy...I am sorry for all the little differences we had but i really did like you and i am sorry i never got to know you alot better, and I regret never been able to fight a fire with you as a partner but now as we move on and question why everything happened we realize that everything happened for a reason and I am reminded of what your dad said at one of the debreifing's "I would really like to think that Andy didn't die in vain and that something good would come out of this, and something has our department has become very close knit in the last few weeks despite our differences and thank you all for your kindness in our time of need" and the truth is our department has pulled together and everybody has started watching eachother's backs and we have started putting new things into practice hoping that it will prevent things like this in the future. I know that god has a special place for firefighter's when thay die and I know that you will be with us on every call as our guardian angel watching over and guiding each of us in safety. I in all the confusion and chaos I never really got to say goodbye and that in time I will be able to understand all of it, but until than i can only say that you will be missed a great deal by all of us at the hall. So rest and enjoy what fate had in store for you for when your last alarm sounded the events of that day were already written down in gods book and he was preparing a place for you with him. I will miss you alot."

"You were a hero. Not for lossing your life in the line of duty, for you did not wish to die in that fire. Your a hero for doing what so many people are to scared, or unwilling to do. I respect the way you lived. We will miss you for who you were and what you did, not how you died. The bell rings thrice for you tonight."

"Andy....Thank you for teaching me and believing in me. I will do my best to carry on what you started. I will miss you very much...it just won't be the same here without you to protect us. You will live on with everything I do and be with me everywhere I go. Everyone says that you were the best, you still are the best in my eyes. We may have fought like siblings do but I want you to know how much I do love you and will be lost without you. You took a piece of me without you when you left so that means we will be together forever. I love you!!! You will always be MY BROTHER.....MY HERO....MY FRIEND FOREVER!!! Love Always, SIS"

"Andy-----Thank you for responding to the calls of neighbors and even strangers in peril time after time. For seeing your response as your "duty"....and for being a hero to many. For giving the ultimate sacrifice(your life) in helping others. For allowing the local community to rest a little more peacefully knowing that you and others like you are there in their time of need. You deserve this tribute, you deserve our prayers, you deserve our genuine and lasting thanks. For a job well done you will be remembered always. A friend "

"My son was killed by a drunk on his tow truck job May 3, 2000 and his passion and second family was the firehall. God bless your family and friends. I have the judicial system to deal with because the killer left the scene and will not be charged with being drunk. I thought I lost my son in March 99 when our Kmart burned and there were firemen hurt and Jay was the last one in the Kmart when the roof caved in. Jay was 21 and I just feel so bad for everyone.
